Kavan Balasuriya’s solo exhibition ‘Lightlines’ opens in Colombo, abstract paintings created with aluminum foil
Work on display
Saskia Fernando Gallery (41 Horton Pl, Colombo), a contemporary art gallery in Colombo 7, is currently holding Kavan Balasuriya’s solo exhibition “Lightlines.”
Balasuriya is a contemporary artist from Colombo whose work focuses on drawing. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, University of the Arts London, and is currently based in London. He has exhibited his work in solo and group shows domestically and internationally, including in the UK and Ireland, and in 2018 he collaborated with Alankara, a Colombo-based jewelrer, to hold a pop-up gallery, combining jewelry and abstract paintings.
Balasuriya is currently exploring the potential of creating static objects into fluid visual experiences by tracing and engraving the aluminum foil surface. Inspired by architecture, textiles, and craft-based practices, he creates geometric abstractions and uses his drawing practice to engage in a dialogue between maker and material.
The exhibition features a collection of geometric abstract drawings in ink and aluminum foil. Visitors can experience how foreground and background exchange places and how light becomes a shadow as the viewpoint changes.
Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed Sundays.
