Work on Display at the exhibition “Within Boundaries”

On December 15, artist Arjuna Gunarathne’s solo exhibition “Within Boundaries” opened at Saskia Fernando Gallery (41 Horton Pl, Colombo), a contemporary art gallery in Colombo 07.

Gunarathne is a visual artist from Sri Lanka. He studied Fine Arts in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom and also researched the ancient mural paintings of South Asia. Currently based in London, he works on his ongoing experiments with a distinct and dynamic visual style inspired by murals and miniature paintings. Some of his works belong to the Royal Art Collection in England and the Contemporary Art Collection in India.

Gunarathne combines Eastern and Western traditions to create unique works that focus on political, social, and personal experiences. In this exhibition, he reveals a private world of anxieties and vulnerabilities with vivid colors and textures, focusing on subjects such as the anxiety and alienation felt in a new place and lone figures waiting with a craving for warmth and familiarity. The “Legal or Illegal?” series of color ink works express the artist’s experience of relocating to a new place in search of stability and his reflections on home and identity.

Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed Sundays. The exhibition will run until January 15.
