New tempura restaurant Tempura Shikisen opens in Colombo, also offering nigiri & sushi rolls
Inside Tempura Shikisen
Tempura Shikisen (No. 24, School Lane, Colombo 03), a restaurant specializing in Japanese tempura dishes, opened in Colombo on January 2.
The restaurant is located in the Bambalapitiya district, a neighborhood lined with shopping malls, galleries, and restaurants. The owner, Saman Perera, had lived in Japan for a few years and wanted to open a Japanese restaurant in Sri Lanka.
The white interior features a Japanese design with hanging scrolls, Japanese dolls, and Japanese shuttlecocks, traditionally made of soapberry seeds and bird feathers. A wooden pergola stands over the tables, and bamboo screens are used as a partition.
Tempura, the signature dish, is served as an assortment and a single dish. The Tempura Platter with rice, miso soup, and pickles is available in three courses: the Matsu Course (Rs. 3,800) includes three prawn, three squid, and five vegetable tempura; the Take Course (Rs. 3,500) comes with two prawn, two squid, and five vegetable tempura; and the Ume Course (Rs. 2,300) features eight kinds of vegetable tempura. Ten types of individual tempura are available, including prawn, sweet potato, eggplant, pumpkin, carrot, and kakiage, priced from 400 to 1,200 rupees for a set of three.
In addition to tempura, the restaurant also offers a sushi menu. Nigirizushi, a type of sushi comprising raw or grilled seafood over a ball of sushi rice, is available in Tsuru/Crane Set (Rs. 4,600 for eight pieces) and Kame/Turtle Set (Rs. 3,600 for six). Makizushi, or sushi rolls, includes a choice of Tekka-maki (tuna rolls), Kappa-maki (cucumber rolls), Tempura Prawn Maki, Seafood Maki, and others (6 pieces per plate).
