The Social Colombo enhances bao bun lineup – Delivering Asian fusion dishes
Crispy Chicken Bao Buns
The Social, Colombo, an Asian food delivery store in Colombo, has been strengthening its lineup of bao buns — a type of Chinese bun-style sandwich — since August.
The restaurant, The Social Unawatuna, used to cater to tourists in Unawatuna, a suburb of Galle located in southern Sri Lanka known for its beaches and coral. It opened in 2018, and Shehantha Goonasena, one of the co-owners, described that “it was one of the top three most popular restaurants in the area, with 100 to 150 visitors every day.” The restaurant has been temporarily closed due to the pandemic, and the staff moved to Colombo to open a new delivery store in December last year.
The bao menu includes Crispy Chicken (Rs.790 for four buns) with Sriracha and honey sauce and Thai Fish/Prawn Cakes (Rs.890 for four buns) with sweet chili sauce. In August, it added limited edition baos such as Honey Prawn and Beef Schnitzel. “We use only good quality imported ingredients. The quality of the mixture makes our bao buns so puffy,” said Shehantha. It also serves other “Asian fusion” dishes such as dumplings and fried rice, and prices range from 690 to 1,250 rupees.
Shehantha added: “It all depends on the COVID-19 situation, but when tourism recovers 30 to 40 percent from the previous level, we will move back to Unawatuna and resume our restaurant business. We are also thinking of opening more accommodation facilities there. Eventually, we are planning to open a restaurant in Colombo.”
Customers can order through Uber Eats, PickMe Food, EatMe Global, or by phone.
