Online shop Loukoumades offers sweets with roots in ancient Greece
A gift box with four varieties
Three months have passed since Loukoumades, an online shop offering Greek donuts, opened in Colombo.
The shop opened on July 11. It specializes in loukoumades, a traditional Greek dessert with roots in ancient Greece. Shamha Fazloon, the owner, says: “I love desserts. My main inspiration for starting my own business was my entrepreneurial spirit. The history of bakers in my family was a major influence as well.”
Loukoumades are balls of dough pastry deep-fried and soaked in sugar syrup. The shop offers two types of loukoumades: Standard and Premium. The Standard comes in five varieties, including Signature, Triple Chocolate, Cinnamon Sugar, and Peanut Butter (Rs.1,980 each). For the Premium option, customers can choose from seven types of toppings (Rs.2,390 each), including Nutella & Pistachios, Nutella & Kit Kat, White Chocolate Oreo, and Strawberry Cheesecake. There is also Half & Half (Rs.2,590) where customers can choose any two flavors listed on the menu.
Fazloon says: “I mainly use my mother’s recipes for these ancient Greek mini-donuts and put my own twist to them.” Currently, Loukoumades accepts orders online and sells them only through delivery, but Fazloon plans to open a café and serve a wide range of flavors very soon.
Opening hours: noon to 8:00 p.m. Orders can be placed via Instagram, Facebook, and Uber Eats.
