Colombo’s fusion taco restaurant Taco Shack goes from Cloud Kitchen to physical restaurant
Tacos from Taco Shack
It has been a month since Taco Shack, a taco restaurant, opened on Isipathana Mawatha in Colombo 5.
“Both my parents worked at high-end resorts in the Maldives, and our family is very big on cooking,” said Shihaan Vandort, the owner. In the United States, where they lived for six years during his high school years, he said that they used to eat Mexican food every week. In July this year, he started the restaurant as a Cloud Kitchen and opened the actual restaurant on November 1.
With the help of a handyman and friends, Vandort renovated the restaurant for the opening, and he said, “From painting the shop to making the tables and chairs, everything was done by us.” The restaurant has an area of 600 square feet and three tables, and it can accommodate six people.
The tacos at the restaurant, Vandort describes as “fresh, oily, greasy, and easy to eat with the street food aspect,” are served in a fusion style that combines Mexican and Sri Lankan cuisines. The menu includes Spicy Beef Taco (Rs.400) with curry flavor, Crispy Buttered Prawn Taco (Rs.600) with sriracha sour cream, and Mango Chicken Taco (Rs.350) with Sri Lankan chicken and fresh mango salsa.
It also offers quesadillas and has recently added Mexican Birria-style noodles to its menu. Vandort, who says cooking and creating recipes are his passion, added, “I want to bring Taco Shack across Sri Lanka
and want everyone to experience the food.”
Opening hours: 11:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays). Closed on Sundays.
