Saskia Fernando Gallery (41 Horton Pl, Colombo), a contemporary art gallery in Colombo 11, is currently holding “Dreamscapes,” a solo exhibition by artist Chathurika Jayani Dilrukshi.

Jayani, who depicts surreal cityscapes in heavy-set colors and textures, began her career as a freelance artist in 2010 after completing her studies at the University of Visual & Performing Arts. Her unique painting style using recycled materials, such as burned wood, wax leaves, and wools, was established during her university days.

She has exhibited her works in Sri Lanka as well as in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Maldives, but this is the first time for her to hold an exhibition at Saskia Fernando Gallery. The theme of the exhibition is “the changing skyline, foggy environments, and the shape of cloud formations over buildings.” She said, “Wool material is the highlight of this exhibition.”

Jayani added: “I decided to depict a surreal world because I had the desire to show the beauty of the city, its colors, and the beauty of the night. I wanted to show the beauty of it without looking at the ugly side of urbanity in general.”

Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays. The exhibition will run until February 20.
