The exhibition “Encounters”

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Sri Lanka (Crescat Boulevard, 89 Colombo-Galle Main Rd, Colombo 00300) is currently holding an exhibition entitled “Encounters.”

The exhibition opened on February 11. The museum moved to the first floor of Crescat Boulevard, a shopping mall in Colombo 3, from its former location on the 17th floor of the Innovation Tower Building in Colombo 4. This is the first exhibition to be held in conjunction with the relocation and opening.

The exhibition will run for six months. Under the theme of “Encounters,” it is structured as a sequence of changing displays that bring together encounters between approximately 60 works by 18 modern and contemporary artists. In addition to paintings, it showcases magazines and photographs of historical value. The works are divided into six groups, with one group on display for the entire period and the remaining five groups replaced in turn. By changing the exhibits, the organizers hope to propose “playful and at times contentious comparisons between the familiar and unexpected” and encourage visitors to see if the new encounters reveal something new about each of them.

The works on view are chosen from the John Keells and George Keyt Foundation Collections, ranging from the 1950s to the present. During the exhibition, the museum will hold talks with the artists on-site and the curator’s tours online. Free events and lectures are also available in English, Sinhala, and Tamil (reservations required).

Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (until 8:00 p.m. on Fridays). Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Free admission and event participation. The exhibition is open until August 28.
