Exhibition ‘The Odd Man Out’ opens at Barefoot Gallery in Colombo
Exhibited work “Cart Bull”
Barefoot Gallery (No. 704, Galle Road, Colombo 3, TEL +94 770 255 470), a contemporary art gallery in Colombo 3, is currently holding a posthumous exhibition of the artist Fareed Uduman (1917-85), entitled “The Odd Man Out.”
The exhibition opened on March 24, featuring “startlingly original” oil paintings of the artist, who was “extraordinary but unknown as a painter.” As Uduman was once a cartoonist for The Nation, a weekly publication published by the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), the exhibition also includes copies of cartoons from the time.
Since he never signed or titled his oil paintings, his son, Jomo, titled the works “helped by some hazy recollections of discussions” he had with his father.
Uduman’s works have been reevaluated since the exhibition of his posthumous works at Gallery 706, the Barefoot Gallery’s former name, in 1993. Most of his early works have perished, and today the family has managed to retrieve 35 paintings.
Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays. The exhibition will run until April 16.
